You'll find Nightgowns, sleep shirts, etc at All catalogues, but Redcats Group prices are usually best, especially if you have the time and patience to shop clearances.
BCO outlet is the clearance center for all of the Redcats stores (Woman Within. Roamans, Jessica London, Avenue, plus Ulla Popken) and here you ca find deep discounts, sometimes even a polyester (very silky charmeuse) sexy nightgown for little as $16. 

I've shopped LOTS of lingerie specialty sites, but these are the ones that I can recommend.

Lady Grace.com  has the best assortment of body smoothers, shapers and cast iron girdles I’ve found so far.  Even better, they have a variety of parts, so, while ladies with average torso lengths can buy an all in one-piece “shaper” (including bra, midriff/back whittler and girdle)  the petites and long torso gals can buy the pieces separately, for a custom fit. 

Some pieces are practical (literally squeezing you into a lump-free hourglass figure.  Uncomfortable after a while, but looking like the diet worked better than it really did.  They compress your skin to get rid of creases, rolls and bounce. 

Others are just to cover your skin so your clothes don’t stick when you get hot and sweaty dancing.  READ the descriptions, but be prepared to be misled, because cast iron girdle makers describe their products as silky shapers, while silky shapers promise to get rid of bulges.  As always, expect to send things back for other styles and sizes.

Don't be shy about searching around the world.  The best selection I ever found was at Bravissimo's store in Milton Keynes, England.  Tons of Gorgeous Bras!  
Your credit card will be accepted for any currency , anywhere.  Just make sure that you set up an account with a bank that won't gouge you for currency changing.  That used to cost them a lot.  Now, it's routine, so don't stay with a card company that gives you hassles.

READ the consumer reviews!   
On the reviews, women who like the bra will tell you if and where bra you're considering tends to run large or small.  I’ve often be advised to buy an extra band or cup size up or down.
In Goddess sizes, on my beloved Kiera style, I have to order 3 cup sizes up to get a good fit.

Like other clothes sizes, bra sizes claim to be standard and AREN’T.  In the reviews previous buyers tell you whether you need to buy a cup or band size up or down.  Also, hope for good tips on comfort and durability.

ONLINE BRA STORES

Bravissimo.com UK  MANY gorgeous, sexy, practical,  sturdy bras up to N cup size.  We're talking lace, lots of colors, multi-colored bras, evenup to N cups!  No orthopedic bras here!  They're MORE supportive than my old orthopedic bras, but (assuming that they fit) they're comfortable and the kind of bras you only expect to find up to a D cup!
Even better, when you shop, they give you a chart that shows all of the sizes they have available in that style and color, so you can see at a glance whether you could get a size larger or smaller.  This is a real time saver.

Figleaves.com  carry Panache bras  I found a 20% off sale!  Nice styles and good brands.
Lady Grace.com  isn't as good for bras as for shape wear.  They have too many orthopedic looking bras with multiple layers of plastic foam and fabric that don't let air near your skin.  Not only that. but these grandma-looking bras don't support my large breasts as well as the flimsy-looking lace bra styles at Bravissimo!   
Still, as I said before, this is the best site I've found for shapewear.

HerRoom.com  Almost as good as Bravissimo, but not as many bras combining sexy & sturdy.  


Obviously, I haven't found many good to great online sites, but there isn't even one brick and mortar store in the San Francisco Bay Area where I can walk in and find a selection of truly wonderful, practical, comfortable bras.  My online search had years of "better than the last one, but it still hurts" bras. 
I found out last year that my sister, who is exactly my size, was still wearing a 44 DDD, which her department store fitter assured her was "perfect.  Well, the red welts below her breasts said something else.  She deserved better.  And so do you!

BE READY TO SEND SHOES BACK.  Sizes are NOT standard!  You size 6D foot may find a perfect home in a shoe labelled 6EE or even 6 C!  It’s often just luck.

   

Redcats Group (catalogues include often reasonably priced shoes and often-overpriced purses) Their shoes are often cute and if you have a D width foot or less, you can be happy here.
HOWEVER...

    If you measure their WW or Xwide shoes, you find they nearly match their D width, even though they claim to be EE widths.  
Being a EEE who often fits EEs, I don't even bother trying any more.  I skip Redcats stores' shoe sales as a waste of time.

Footsmart.com  has good outlet  prices, carries the Propet brand.  I’ve never has any service problems with them.  They carry some nice styles into EE.  They also carry lots of shoes marked EE that aren't.  If you want to save time, stick to the Propet brand. 

Hotterusa.com (UK)1866 378 7811  up to D/E.  They advertise an EEE width in a few styles, but rarely in any color other than black and brown.  This site is a heartbreaker, because lots of these shoes look really pretty and comfy, in reds, blues, purples and even yellow!  Then Poof!  The ones they claimed were in my size (if any) are only in brown.    But it gets worse!

I went to one of their mall stores in Milton Keynes, England and tried on the only pair of EEEs they had.  Like so many shoes I've tried before, it was marked EEE but it was actually  only a D/E.  Holding it up to the next size down, neither I or my companion could see a difference.  What a disappointment!                 

If you only need a D width, they have cute comfort shoes: walkers, mary janes, sandals, with lots of padding & support.

Onlineshoes.com  has shoes for EEEE feet.  (Count 'em!  4E's!) Some cute ones, lots of choices for walking shoes. Several views of each shoe!  I had no problems with orders, quick delivery or returns.  the returns were a first.  Some of the shoes were too big!  I actually gave two pairs to a tall friend who wears size 12 EE.  They fit her.

ShoeMall.com  has several views of each shoe, so you  know whether the shape of the sole matches the shape of your foot,, how wide the heel is, how well-supported your foot will be.

They also print consumer  reviews of shoes that will let you know if you need to buy one size up or down to accommodate  your  needs to the idiosyncracies of the manufacturers ideas of sizing.

Zappos.com has FREE SHIPPING both ways, until you have a hoe that fits!  This will save you a lot!

      My order arrived in 4 days (standared delivery, which was included in the cost).  3 pairs of shoes, bought half price or less on clearance.  I was very surprised that the Propet “Seville”boots in 4E fit.  Usually Propet’s 2E fit exactly this way.  Really cute and comfy!  So does this mean that Propet has chaned sizing again?

I also got a pair of sandals and a pair of heels from David Tate.  Cute, but not as comfy in patent leather.  It rubs on the edges, even though the fit is good.  I’ll be gluing a soft lining along those edges.  (sigh) It must be great  to have normal size everything and not have to learn how to adjust shoes and  clothes with linings, darts, etc.

  These are my most reliable Shoe brands of the ones I've tried.  They have cute, well made styles for EE-EEE feet   Sometimes you MAY find a non -orthopedic 4E.

      Heels to E (not EE) width:  Softspots "Neima" is a pretty sandal heel that comes in several colors.  "EE" is actually a generous D-E.  Be ready to call and ask them to search stock and send you a wider one.  I did and they sent one that I could actually have worn (for brief periods of time) to replace one I actually couldn't get my foot into.  Both were marked the same size, so persist.

Ashro.com 1800 865 9442  Lots of fat store clothing is bland and even boring.  Ashro breaks the mold.

    They market to gorgeous black women, and have great dress-up and date  clothes,

    hot Easter Sunday church  lady outfits, dressy mother of the bride outfits!  There are a few very

    attractive “ethnic” African clothes.  (Why aren’t Paris fashions called “ethnic”?) I like them because

    they’d look good on my plus size figure and they tend to be cotton and comfy-looking.  The ladies’

    headdresses would be a great chemotherapy option!

    Also wigs, although I’ve never bought one from them..

    I usually very good prices and lots of fun looks that are hard to find in large sizes!

Catherine.com  Pear shaped?  Good news!  Many of Catherines selections are geared toward large

    thighs and proportionately small waists.  Scanning their site this morning was a revelation!  The skirts  

    fit their models around the waist, then bagged around the thigh area. 

    This bodes well for those of us who need that cut! 

    The bad news was that prices are high.    A polyester A-line skirt is listed

           “on clearance” for over $50. 

    A simple cotton kurta blouse (usually around $36retail, is over $40 in

            “clearance”.  Moral:  Shop carefully!

CasualLivingusa.com  1800 843 1881  Yuppie casual.  Office wear.

Chicos.com  sizes 0-22  Market to a younger, thinner crowd, but some fun items.

ColdwaterCreek.com   professional  class work and casual clothes.  Beware of dry clean only, but they DO have some very flattering styles., especially if you’re 5’1’-5’6”  I’m 5’10”, so all I buy is skirts and scarves.  Worth knowing:  They have a "forever" return policy.  IF your dress looks bad after you wash it, they'll take it back.

DevaLifeWear.com  1800 222 8024  “cottage industry seamstresses make a living wage working from home” making this cotton “lifewear” SML XL, 2x, 3x in basic shapes (not tailored) in varying weights of cotton weaves and knits.  Very plain , but ideal if you want quality basics to bead  or build a look.  For fall 2011 they also have pirate shirts and some Ren Faire or Celtic Pride-appropriate shirts.

Fashion Bug is a brick and mortar (find it at the strip-mall) store.  They carry large sizes.  I haven't had much luck there, but friends have.  Happy hunting!
 

Igigi.com  Sexy clothes cut to celebrate (not hide) the full figure.   Weddings, formals, cocktails and work wear, Service address is in SF!   These are cut to show your best curves. 

JessicaLondon.com  Redcats group member.  Work and relaxation wear.  Sexy looking models who are about 5'3".  IF you're tall, look for them in a mini-skirt and that'll be your next tunic.  Very nice styles and if you need skirts, they have some great ones.  just remember,. the neckline that looks low on them with be moderate on you and the moderate neckline will strangle you.  Lots of cotton and linen blend fabrics are available.

JustMySize.com  bras 38A-58J  clothing 14W-40W

     JMS has LOTS of non-tailored, cotton and cotton blend knit T’s shirts, jackets and skirts.  I also like their in-house  jeans.  These clothes are NOT SEXY, but very simple and comfy, at reasonable prices.  They occasionally have some good sales. 

LaneBryant.com  (now separated from “Woman Within”) seems to aim at a short skirt demographic.

     I was looking at jeans and they didn’t list inseam length  on the info, I went on to the “fit”  sheet and came up empty.  No fit sheet!  Just an  empty page. downloaded. 

MiBplus size.com (Making It Big) models are large size, lots of cottons & linens Cotton tunic, untailored for $79 normal to super-sizes, nice styles.Embroidery, 

Navabi.us.com  Theorectically, they have  sizes 12-28.  I spent 15 minutes in their clearance section and

     didn’t find anything over a 24 in stock. Great looking hot weather clothing in cool, natural, lightweight

     fabrics.  You may want to tell your skinny friends who have hot flashes?

Nordstroms.com Has an annual sale in May of women's clothes.  Last year I made out like a bandit with pencil skirts, blouses and a "Sunday Brunch" outfit.  If you have a Nordstorm card I hear they do free alterations.

     July  27 ’11, went through entire plus size clearance.  Most items didn’t go above size 18.  The two items I looked at that seemed promising were out of stock, but still listed!  Bought nothing.

Work & sports clothes, lingerie, Mother of the Bride /church clothes, D width shoes.  dress-up.  Lately lots of lace, embroidery and some beadwork.  

UllaPopken.com Clothing sized for 5’8” women, insean usually 30-31”, LOTS of long 30-36” blouses, 

     Lots of natural fibers, compared to other sites.  Clothing ranges from yuppie to bohemian and

     hippy-chic, usually some nice embroidered sleeves, bodices and necklines, usually beaded  or

     grometted  peces available.  Almost always great buys on clearance. 

Simply Be.com (UK), Clothing sized  for 28” torso, 30” inseam

     July 27’11 went through entire clearance section.  Actually found 6 skirts in my size (24)

                  at very good prices.  I’ll let you know how they are when they arrive.
 October'11  Bought 5 pairs of flashy, sassy Oscar Red Carpet HIGH heels in, get this! size 10 EEE!  So excited!  Until they arrived.  
My often measured foot IS a size 10EEE.  These shoes were 3/4 inch too narrow.  That's it's own subject.  
Moral:  Their heels aren't even close to true to width. Four pairs of the offending heels were from Viva La Diva.  On behalf of Divas everywhere, I'm offended. 

Soft Surroundings.com  Nice, sexy descriptions of “silk-blend, curve-loving “  $128 fishermen’s sweaters. They have knits and soft wovens.  Some of these could be worn to an office.  Enjoyable reading and whqat appears to be nice, pricey casual wear, but only up to size 24.  Lots of long tops (32”, 34”) but Tall girls, beware!  One of the photos has what appears to be a moderately low (no cleavage) neckline, and it drapes halfway down the thigh on a model in who must be under 5 feet tall, since the caption says the shirt is 30” long.  On a tall gall, that wouldn’t cover your bottom, much less drape below the hips..

Sonsi.com  This is Lane Bryant merchandise displayed in a magazine/catalogue format.  Medium size models, (not twigs, but only slightly upholstered)  Some nice shapes, a few teen-friendly items.  Some very very matronly styles.  Not dependable about including lengths on dresses and formal gowns, or whether the item can be washed or dry-cleaned.  I’m guessing most of these floor length Spring Prom and mother-of the Bride gowns would hit me mid-calf?  But that’s just a guess. And if they don’t SAY an item can be cleaned, be wary!

Southwest Indian Foundation  Jesuit 800 504 2723 long cotton skirts, matching or coordinated  knit

cotton tops, well made and very washable,from

     $29-$ 79,  perfect colors for coordinating with your Southwestern look blouses and Native American

     Jewelry.  This company is a fundraiser for Catholic missionary work with Native Americans.  I don’t know if  the products are made in America, but the quality is good.  I can’t vouch for the jewelry prices (not an  expert)

Talbots.com  sizes 12-24, Not my favorite, but they get points for hiring large sized models (size 18-ish)..  Lots of polyester priced over $100. 

     They don’t put the length on tops, so unless you know the model personally, you can’t guess whether

      she’s 5’2” or 6’2”.

Men’s Clothing 

Ladies!  It’s easier to find bigshirts, long turtlenecks and tees in Men’s and Men’s Tall sizes!  Just be aware that shoulders and pants fronts may be oversized for you.  As always, compare your measurements to the size charts and be aware that men’s clothes are often cut to be really REALLY loose on skinny guy legs, which means it’s a good bet they’ll skim over your thighs! .

There is no better place to find “boyfriend” sweaters, shirts, etc, than men’s catalogues!

Brick and Mortar (Real) Stores: Burlington Coat Factory

Today while I was giving blood (literally) my hostess told me that the really cute, practical (slightly sparkly, but machine washable) tunic she had on was $25 at Burlington Coat Factory!

I've checked them out before, and neither I or their clerks found anything in a size over 1x, so frankly, I was surprised.  
My informant wasn't.  She often has a terrible time locating anything in that store, but she stuck to it til she struck gold. 

Apparently Burlington Coat Factory is one of those "Sometimes they have something, sometimes They don't." stores. 

She said the clerks didn't know enough to help her.  She had a hard time finding the 2x's, stuck in a back corner.  BUT, once she found them, they actually had a really good selection, up to 3x !  So maybe Burlington's could work for you?

Maybe, if you don't think of it as shopping, but indoor exercise, as you prowl like a lioness, through aisle after aisle, till you corner your elusive prey?

If you prowl fast, you may work up a sweat, then, by the time you find your tunic, you could be one X smaller?

This doesn't seem like a practical shopping method.  You might be able to find and order your item and get it delivered to your house before you chance upon the legendary Large Sizes Collection at Burlington Coat Factory.

But it was a really cute tunic...

Diets Hmmmmm...

As time has gone by and diets have succeeded and failed, I've become a cynic.  That whole notion that once I've gone down a couple of sizes, I should toss out my "fat clothes" on the theory that I'll never gain the weight back has proved really stupid.  

About 9 years ago, I broke my life-long diet. In high school I weighed a horrendous 185 pounds. On one food plan or another I'd lose 15 pounds then gain back 22, then lose 40 and gain back 60.  Diet by diet, I was gradually zig zagging up to 322 pounds.

One day, I just stopped.  I started eating whatever I wanted.  I thought I'd start packing on pounds like a prize hog.  But I didn't.  My weight stayed the same. It finally occurred to me that back when I weighed 185, I wasn't gaining weight until after I dieted down to 160 (then shot up to 221.)  Would I still be 185 pounds if I'd never gone on that first diet?

For me, at least, the diets have been a disaster.

Since I realized that, I've focused on what foods I feel better with or without.  For instance, wheat (yes, I DO mean anything made with flour, even whole wheat flour!) makes me sleepy and kind of depressed. 
Milk makes me gassy.  I guess I must be lactose intolerant.
I'm diabetic (apparently not because of diet, since my entire family is diabetic.) But that means that I can't have large amounts of sugar without burning out nerve cells (including ones in my brain!) 
Having no extra brain cells to spare, I'm not risking that. 

I don't give anything up.  I substitute healthy foods that I like for things (including those listed above) that I'm not willing to put up with.

For instance, I love fruit, and I like beans, so I sub fruit and beans for bread and most cereals...   MOST of the time.  If I really want something, or if it's ceremonial (like wedding cake or birthday cake) I'll make exceptions. 

I refuse to let myself feel deprived.  I found out that if I have a serious craving and I don't immediately give in to it, I end up spending thousands more calories on "healthier substitutes"  that don't stop the craving and only lead to even more "healthy substitues"  For instance, if I want See's Candy and I go and buy it and eat it, 'll have consumed 5000 calories.  And be craving free for about three months.

If, on the other hand, I tell mysel "See's Candy is BAD!"  and the craving doesn't go away, I'm likely to come home with a bag of Snack Wells, fried foods and heaven knows what else.  The craving can go on indefinitely, and turn into LOTS more calories than the original See's would have been.

So now I give any craving five days.  If it's still there, I give in.  

The pounds aren't peeling off.  They're very slowly crawling away, a few at a time.  But before, between whatever diets I was pinning my hopes on at the time, I was consistently gaining weight.  Now, over a period of YEARS, not weeks, just giving up things that I don't miss, I'm down to 272, (as of this morning.) 

My blood sugars are well enough under control that my doctor has cut my medication.

My point here is to pay attention to what YOUR body needs. 
Make sure you have your protein and healthy fats to fuel and heal and your fruits and veg of choice for fiber and carbs plus LOTS of water to keep your intestinal tract clean and moving swiftly.

After that, do whatever keeps you happiest and healthiest, because that's what will make you free to enjoy your body and your life!

Returns: Simply Be

I returned the high heels.  Calling the return phone number on my packing slip, I spoke to a nice, but confused clerk who honestly didn't grasp that shoes might be mis-marked , or that there might be sizes above "extra wide."  Even so, he was as helpful as he could be, and Simply Be's return policy is great.  They enclose FREE return labels in every shipment. (They're the lower half of the packing slip.  They peel off and are self-adhesive, so you just stick them directly over the original address label). 
So this is one of the stores where a problem item WON'T cost you $17 to send back.
As I said, I tried to find out if they have any 10EEEs that actually ARE true to size.  No luck there, so until I hear otherwwise, I won't waste my time trying to buy shoes there, but those of you whop wear D width, be aware, they have some really sexy heels.  But you may need to order a EEE to get a D.  Good luck!

The Quest : Glamorous Heels in 3 E Widths (Not at SimplyBe.com)

When I walk out on stage I want to look like Dolly Parton's more glitzy sister.  

I'm serious!  Being on stage is the perfect excuse to wear all those Barbie Doll clothes that would just look silly at a PTA meeting!  The dresses, jeans, tops are becoming available, but when it comes to finding really  cool high heels to complete the outfit, it's an ongoing quest.

I started thinking about this back when I actually had a Barbie Doll.  Her shoes looked SO pretty.  The fact that they were so uncomfortable looking didn't phase me much, since at the time, I thought I was going to be a ballerina and spend most of my time dancing on tip-toe anyway.  

Then I grew to be 5'7" (too tall for a ballerina) them finally 5'10".  I knew it was time to hang up my toe shoes, but I still loved the idea of "entrance heels."  

Entrance heels are red-carpet shoes:  the ones you show up and make your grand entrance in.  You make that all-important first impression, pose for photos, then quietly change into the dancing slippers you've been carrying in your gorgeous beaded purse, so you can dance the night away.

Great plan.  But where does someone like me get entrance heels?  I've found very nice, comfy 3" heels from David Tate and Propet.  On me, they look the way a 2" heel looks on someone who's 5'3."  Nice, but not glamorous.

Mother of the Bride styles.  Available at Footsmart.com and Shoemall.com.  

But I never found my gorgeous dream of Barbie-doll/Oscars night-worthy heels.

Then there they were, on a British website called "Simply Be."  A huge selection of AMAZING EEE width glam-heels!  ON SALE!

I was seriously excited!  Even my postman was excited for me!  

Until they arrived. 

They were beautiful.  Gold sequins, red patent leather, Silver satin, apparently well made, yet each pair under $60!  (Wide shoes, like other hard-to-get commodities, can be VERY expensive.)

There was just one issue:  They were all approximately D width. 

How do I know that?  

I think I'll have to buy one of those shoe-store foot measurers. You know?  The one you step on with the ball of your foot against one spot, then you slide the little marker over against the outside of your foot and read the width it points to?

Well, MY width on those foot measurers is invariably EEE.  And these gorgeous shoes were all about 3/4 inch too narrow for my feet.  Yet these heels were marked 10 EEE.  The boxes they came in said 10EEE.  The shipping form in the box said 10 EEE.  And the Simply Be online catalogue I purchased them from said 10EEE.

So, did I expect them to be 10EEE?  

Not really.  This has happened too many times.  Apparently, most shoe companies believe that people (like us) who want to buy EEE shoes DON'T REALLY have EEE feet.  Just delusions of grandeur.

So they humor us, by making their D width shoes available, stamped with any size marking we choose to order.

The worst thing is that lots of times, we don't RETURN the shoes, insisting on free postage, (since after all, mis-marked sizes are a manufacturing flaw) and so THEY WIN!    They sold a shoe that wasn't what they claimed and they made their money.  

Meanwhile one of us was conned out of her hard earned cash, but kept quiet and probably kept the shoes too, wishfully thinking that maybe someday the bones in her foot would shrink.

If you ordered the wrong size shoe, you may need to pay return costs.  The way you avoid ordering the wrong size is to go to a wide shoe specialty store and measure your feet on that little machine with the slider.  Write down your correct size, NOT what the salesman says you can fit into if you squeeze REAL hard.

Then, ONLY order shoes in the correct size.  If they don't carry shoes wide enough for you, you should complain.  Don't give them any money.

My lovelies, there is no shame in having feet at the lower end of your leg.  ANY feet!  

There IS shame in manufacturers not supplying the sizes and widths they advertise.  That's fraud.  Get mad.  Don't put up with it.  Call your supplier, insist on a free return label, and RETURN Them!

If you have time, go back to the store site (in this case, SimplyBe.com) look the fraudulent item up, and where it says "write a review" warn your sisters not to fall for this con!   

The brand names involved (all mis-marked) were Viva La Diva and Isabella Cole.

Someday, my lovelies, we will live in a world where everyone is treated fairly.
